Forester Mikal Folkertsma: “When you ramble through the reed fields, the willows and past water areas with lots of water birds, you reach the viewpoint from where you are rewarded with a wide panoramic view. Keep your eyes open, there’s so much to see here. The different landscapes combined with a wide variety of animals make this route incredibly special. I always linger here a while between the willows. Moss grows on the trunks of dead trees and old branches are spread out over the ground. You sense a fairytale-like presence here. Nearby a herd of Konik horses graze in the sun. They’re not entirely shy and you’re able to approach them quite closely. I can watch the interaction between the horses and their foals for hours at a time. If you come in the morning, you also have a good chance of spotting some red deer.
My favourite season for walking here is spring. This is when nature finally shakes off winter and the first young animals are born. You can walk to the De Poelruiter bird hide and spot kingfishers, egrets, spoonbills and water rails. And if you’re really in luck you might even catch a sea eagle or osprey hunting in the sky above the water."
