Reclamation
The Markermeer is named after the former island of Marken, and originally created as part of the Zuiderzee works. In 1976 the Markermeer was produced when a dike was laid between Enkhuizen and Lelystad. The lake was closed off from the sea and rivers. While the original intension was the reclamation of the Markerwaard, there is now open water. It’s ideal for water sports.

Challenging region
The Markermeer is a beautiful cruising area for water sports. There’s hardly another waterway in the Netherlands offering so many uncomplicated possibilities. Certainly for experienced water sports enthusiasts, it is a challenging region. If the weather is calm, smaller boats can also cruise happily on the Markermeer.
