Pioneer trail - leg 7

The Pioneer trail is a long-distance walk that runs from Steenwijk in Overijssen across Flevoland to Muiden in North Holland. Because not everyone has the sense and time to walk over 200 kilometres, the walk has been cut into several stages. Welcome to stage 7, from De Hollandse Hout on the edge of Lelystad's built-up area to the Knardijk, the inner dike that forms the border between eastern and southern Flevoland.

You walk towards Oostvaardersplassen. The vast marsh landscape is unique; this is what large parts of the Netherlands must have looked like long ago. The area, made famous by the film De Nieuwe Wildernis, is home to wild cattle, horses and red deer. You also walk through the Knarbos, the middle of which has an open character with a large pond. A herd of Icelandic ponies graze in the forest. A specially dug pool is home to toads, frogs and salamanders.
