Shipwreck cycling route
Flevoland is the youngest province in the Netherlands with a very special genesis. Where there is land now, there used to be water. Here, you literally walk or cycle on the bottom of the former Zuiderzee. Hundreds of shipwrecks were found during the reclamation of Flevoland. Often, the ships date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Flevoland is the largest reclaimed shipwreck graveyard in the world.
The cycle route ‘Shipwrecks route’ takes you along several shipwreck locations in Lelystad. The locations are recognisable by a striped pole (white/blue) with a red image of a ship on it. The wrecks themselves are well preserved underground or have been relocated. Some of the bollards have a QR code. By scanning the QR code, you can find more information about the particular wreck.
